Toddlers and Tiaras
I just saw this commercial on TV for a new show that just came out, and I thought I'd share it with you all. The new show called "Toddlers and Tiaras" focuses on young girls (ages 18mo- 13 years old) who compete in pageants. Being that we are living in the south I never thought twice about the girls that compete in these pageants. After watching this opening though, I began to think from the other side of this argument. Are we exploiting these girls? Is it right to have them wear fake hair, fake teeth, fake eyelashes, and get fake tans, so they can look beautiful? I think this sets these girls up for unrealistic expectations on what their bodies should look like. I also wonder what are these girls going to think of their bodies as they get older, if this is what they are exposed to at such an early age?! Take a look and tell me your thoughts!

When I was in fourth grade, I switched from a private, parochial school to a public school. A few silent, shy days in class and another girl joined the class. She was the first one to speak to me and told me she had been out of town in a beauty pageant. She was well-spoken and sounded mature but otherwise she looked just like the rest of us. I never thought to ask her what she dressed up like in the actual pageant, but she was definitely the most friendly girl in that class.
ReplyDeleteI have a friend who used to do pageants when she was a toddler and she does not remember now. I've seen the show and some of the girls really don't seem to like it, but others are really into it. I haven't seen too many episodes, but I notice that a lot of times the judges saw they want the children to look natural, but it seems like the more natural the child looks, the less chance they have of going through to the next round. I don't know how it would affect one of the older kids on it though that are like 8 and 9 years old. At that age you can really tell whether or not the child wants it or the parent wants it. I remember one girl practically saying that she was only doing the pageant so she could beat her mom, which she ended up doing. So maybe they see it as more of pleasing their parents? That would be a big disappointment to a child though having to do pageants to please their parents if that's not what they want to do...
