This blog is created by students from Clemson University's spring 2009 course Women's Studies 459 - "Building Bodies: Women's Bodies in Theory and Practice." This class explores the construction of bodies from various methodological perspectives, focusing on five specific areas: theories of bodies; bodies and genders and sexes; “misbehaving” bodies; politics of bodies; and constructing bodies. We welcome comments and contributions to our posts and discussions.

This is a picture of designer Jason Wu and Amanda Lepore, who calls herself "The World's #1 Transexual".

In class yesterday we went through Rebecca's presentation deciding if the person shown was male or female. Looking at this picture instead of wondering if Amanda was male or female I wasn't even sure if she was a person. She looks like a mannequin, and paired with the background I was definitely confused...to be honest I still don't know if she really is a human or if this is a mannequin!

This seems like a real life example of the performance of being female that is exhibited by "Drag Queens". Amanda looks like a Barbie doll, she has a body that no "natural" woman could ever have.

I am wondering a few things....

I wonder why she felt she had to go so extreme in her transformation?

I wonder if this is a manifestation of how she feels inside?
I wonder if she really feels more comfortable in this extreme body she has created then in the body she was given?

  1. She changed herself so she would be more than a symbol! Sometimes I dress very poorly so that I won't be just another symbol or object to be under the gaze. I don't necessarily try to perform as a different gender but more so androgynous so that I become more than just a woman. I think this is about comfort but on a level most can't understand. That is an extreme picture though!! YIKES!

  2. I can't believe this woman was a man once, let alone a real human! This reminds me of the woman that has tried to become a living barbie doll by having over 100 plastic surgeries, I can't imagine putting yourself through so much pain, and spending so much time on money just to make a statement.

  3. This is very EXTREME! I can not imagine someone who would do this to themselves. I actually think that if someone puts themselves out there so much that you can't tell if they are human, can not be truly happy and ultimately is not a human. Why would someone think her body is a symbol...well maybe she is a symbol of inhumane repulsion!
